A political party with a serious need to blunt the privilege issue was considering for vice president someone named J. Danforth Quayle, the name of the rich and pompous banker in old Donald Duck comics. It will be one more piece of evidence supporting the theory that this candidate could have been invented by Democrats. Period in his childhood when he disappeared to Arizona for a dozen years and then somebody calling himself Dan Quayle suddenly turned up in the right Indiana high school with a first-rate golf swing but not a whole lot upstairs.
