Nothing brings out the beast beneath the fair skin and mild manners of Republicans better than a crowd of heavily armed and politically dangerous Gun Owners of New Hampshire. Gun Owner of New Hampshire, an affiliate of the National Rifle Association, brought its battalions together for the first of these forums eight years ago, just before the New Hampshire primary, an event that set the tone not only for the Republican campaign. Independent John Anderson was practically driven from the room when he spoke for gun control. And John Connally electrified the riflemen when he shouted that citizens of the U.S. not only have the right to bear arms but the duty to carry guns.
