The article critically appraises the book "Many Are the Crimes: McCarthyism in America," by Ellen Schrecker. The book discusses the American Communist Party and the anti-communist crusade that became known as McCarthyism. Schrecker does not pretend to provide a comprehensive account of the anti-Communist crusade, claiming that her subject is too large and complex for that. Rather, her method is to give vivid case studies from those sectors of American society that "took the main hits: organized labor, the civil rights movement, the federal government, and the cultural world."
