This article focuses on "To End a War," by Richard Holbrooke, "Kosovo: A Short History," by Noel Malcolm and "Between Serb and Albanian: A History of Kosovo," by Miranda Vickers. Holbrooke's memoir bitterly accuses the Serbs of committing almost all the wartime atrocities and of being least willing to make peace. Malcolm, a popular and prolific writer on the Balkans, argues in his book that Kosovo's history insures its eventual independence from Serbia; that left to their own devices, Serbs and Albanians in Kosovo will not separate amicably. Vickers has a superior intellectual range and works from an objective standard.
