This article focuses on the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. ABC's show PrimeTime Live's attack on SSI added force to the overall attack on entitlements which culminated in the welfare bill, signed into law on August 22, 1996. Among the casualties was children's disability, victim of five deadly words in the new law confining aid to children with "marked and severe functional limitations." At the time U.S. President Bill Clinton signed the welfare bill about a million children were getting the disability money.
