This article comments on the perceived vagaries of the U.S. role as global police, and of relying on actual police officers to sort out societal problems. Several cases reflecting police state included a large bomb that devastated Bali, Indonesia, the collapse of the Irish peace process and the impending civil war in Nepal. In other news, a sniper is causing problems in Washington. The Army was called by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation to search for the sniper. This action reflected the ultimate conflation of army and police. Criticisms relating to the autonomy of police are presented.
