The article presents information on the book "Clement Greenberg: A Life," by Florence Rubenfeld. Clement Greenberg had a unique historical role. Greenberg's greatness, was inseparably linked with his dogmatism. He had slight knowledge of art history and a merely amateurish grasp of intellectual history. No one, early on, defended abstract expressionists with Greenberg's serious passion or placed them firmly within the Modernist canon. Greenberg, a lonely prophet in the 1940s, was famous enough by the sixties to attract followers.
