L'art contemporain has become an incendiary expression in French discourse today, arousing anger and partisanship of a kind largely unknown in the U.S., where "contemporary art" merely denotes the art being made these days. L'art contemporain is subsidized in France to a degree undreamt of in the U.S. The Fondation Nationale d'art Contemporam is charged with a triple mandate: identifying new talent, enriching the national patrimony by purchasing meritorious work for public collections and bringing aesthetic enhancement to public spaces.
