The article discusses the global impact of genetically engineered corn grown in the U.S. Genetic engineering is a process that involves introducing genes from a separate organism into corn or any other food crops in order to express a desired trait. Genetic engineering has transformed agriculture in the U.S. such as genetically engineered potatoes, tomatoes and wheat which are headed toward mass production. Agricultural biotechnology has little to do with idealism and the financial imperatives of the biotechnology industry. The impact of genetically engineered products include the emergence of potential allergens that could trigger reactions in humans, the rising resistance of pests to the Bt toxin and the crossing of new genes into wild relatives.
