The article discusses the efforts of U.S. meat-packing employees to lobby for improved safety conditions. Maria Martinez, a former worker at an IBP meatpacking plant in Pasco, Washington, has led a rally of 800 workers for five weeks. She said that they lost the strike but they gained respect and dignity. Workers at another IBP plant in Amarillo, Texas, protested low wages and chronic staff shortages that made their dangerous jobs more stressful and hazardous. Martinez added that the way to change the meat-packing industry is by informing the people and spreading the work to the public.
