The article focuses on Indonesia's political odyssey. The International Monetary Fund is trying to act as the headquarters of world revolution. By dint of its policies the I.M.F. may be the most subversive force in Asia. It cannot be seriously contended that the West's Asia policy has been guided by the defense of democracy. In the deep financial and economic crisis, now a year old, the purpose of the I.M.F. has been to preserve the system as a whole, to save wherever possible the money of Western lenders and to take advantage of this opportunity to eliminate the remaining Asian restrictions on foreign investments.
