The article discusses the significance of the establishment of East Timor as a country in May 2002 after years of resisting Indonesian occupation. Leader Nicolau Lobato and thousands of Timorese died due to war and famine after Indonesia invaded the island in December 1975. Now the Timorese have been given the time to build a society and practice democracy. The country faces the challenge of overcoming poverty and sustaining economic development. Projects have been initiated by Paulo da Costa Amaral and his Halarae Foundation to help improve the living conditions of the Timorese.
