The article discusses criticisms from several intellectuals against the participation of leftist and scholar Cornel West in a conference honoring the work of philosopher Sidney Hook to be held at the City University of New York. Mark Lilla of the University of Chicago's Committee on Social Thought in Illinois has described the rise of the counter-intellectual, an individual who is engaged in intellectual life mainly to challenge other intellectuals whose political tactics must be combated in kind. West is highly qualified to participate in the conference despite his political activities.
