The article discusses the case of Earth First! environmental activists Darryl Cherney and Judi Bari, whose civil rights were violated when the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the police in Oakland, California accused them of terrorism in 1990. Bari and Cherney were injured in May 1990 when a bomb exploded in the car they were travelling in. The FBI told the local police and leaked to the press that they were terrorists, and that the bomb was made by Bari herself. It was revealed that the FBI had been investigating Bari and Cherney prior to the bombing due to their political activism. The case illustrates the risks posed by antiterrorism measures in the U.S.
