The article focuses on the multibillion dollar smuggling network in the tobacco industry which has landed Philip Morris Inc. and British American Tobacco Co. Ltd. (BAT) to the U.S. courts. It details the authors journey to the province of La Guajira in Colombia, infamous for smuggling exports to the United States. Deploying mass advertising and discount marketing and providing favorable financing terms to the distributors in the battle for market share were the tactics used by both BAT and Morris. Evidences found in February indicates that the profits from smuggling have gone to finance terrorist groups in Iraq and elsewhere and moreover the World Health Organization has come to see smuggling as a major public health issue.
