The article reveals the politics of the United States in its effort to improve cordial relations with Equatorial Guinea. Equatorial Guinea is especially important because of political turmoil in the Persian Gulf and other regions from which the United States imports petroleum. The United States buys almost two-thirds of Equatorial Guinea's petroleum. U.S. President George Bush made a slow but steady blossoming of relations between the United States and the government of Brigadier General Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, who took power in a coup in 1979.
