One of the great sagas of labor victory was the Teamsters organizing drive led by Farrell Dobbs in the thirties. Dobbs was a revolutionary socialist who told the story in a fine book called "Teamster Power," published in 1943. The head of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Daniel Tobin, was being eagerly wooed by the U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt in the latter's efforts to forge a coalition in favor of entering the war. In short order there was a Roosevelt-Tobin deal, setting a pattern in which unions got support from the Labor Federation to collect dues automatically from workers, in return for which unions supported the Labor Federation internationally and the Democrats locally.
