The article discusses the empathetic relations between labor union and president of American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO,) John Sweeney. Republican control of Congress exposed labor to untempered attacks by a Republican Party more right-wing and pro-corporate than under President Ronald Reagan. One of Sweeney's first major efforts was the strawberry work- ers' campaign, in that, the AFL-CIO prepared a sophisticated strategy with many pressure points, but the workers themselves hadn't been adequately mobilized, and it took years to win one small contract.
