The article discusses the play "Freak," directed by David Bar Katz and casting John Leguizamo. The play is about the creation of an alternative kind of man, based on becoming not-dad, while still yearning for the love of a parent who is not worthy. The complexity of these wishes gives the piece its suppleness and daring, for Leguizamo and Katz let ragged threads fly rather than tailoring for neatness. Leguizamo uses his body as a conduit for his mind, though most critics have taken his fierce economy and speed for lightness. The play is richly psychological, only the ending seems false, a moment of reconciliation between son and father that comes off as sentimental, even a tad masochistic.
