This article presents the author's views on the democratic system practiced in the U.S. in relation to the U.S. Presidential election, 2000. New York senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, spoke for the established order when he assured the Washington Post that it does not so much matter who wins. The important thing is the legitimacy of the system. If it does not matter, there is no reason why the two parties and their money patrons spend U.S. $3 billion to win their races. For several decades, the US political system has been sliding toward a loss of legitimacy-the point when most people no longer believe in its writ, never mind the rhetoric that most Americans stopped believing long ago.
