This article presents information about the book "Cloudsplitter," by Russell Banks. This book is Banks's long, brooding fictional meditation on the life of John Brown. Banks is best at the kind of reflective psychological realism that sounds through the stately nineteenth-century cadences of Owen Brown's speech. But Owen is a recognizably modern character: godless, alienated, self-absorbed. To place at his feet the most consequential acts of religiously motivated political violence in American history is to leave them ultimately mysterious. John Brown is a hero of the American left who believed America should be ruled according to the dictates of God.
