This article discusses the play "In the Blood," by Suzan-Lori Parks. The relentless cruelty is, of course, centered on sex, and in five monologues dubbed "confessions" the audience is treated to tales of Hester's rapacious sexuality. The nameless doctor who took advantage of his needy client described Hester as "very giving, very motherly, very obliging, very understanding, very phenomenal." The caseworker identified simply as Welfare Lady describes the "thrill" of a threesome with Hester and her husband. It seems that no one encounters Parks's Hester without a sexual epiphany, and yet not once are we shown a glimpse of what a firebrand she can be.
