The invisibility of people of color on the small screen is like an unspoken joke that lingers in the subconscious of the television aficionado. Predictably, the reactions from the networks range from defensive to patronizing. The honchos at NBC and ABC claim they are concerned about diversity, with ABC recently announcing it will add four new African-American characters and one Asian-American character to two new and two returning shows. The whiteness in TV casting is economically motivated. Battered by competition from cable television, the Internet and specialty media, the networks have lost ground in the pursuit of an upscale demographic that is largely white.
