This article focuses on the book "The Man Who Listens to Horses," by Monty Roberts. Roberts does not "break" horses. He "starts" horses and has gentled thousands of all breeds for more than four decades on his farm near Solvang, California. He applies what he learned in his early teens tending herds of free-ranging mustangs in Nevada, watching for body-language signals, using minimal restraints and inflicting no pain. This may be the first time horse training has been extensively discussed in a journal devoted to progressive politics. The horse was used for war before it was used for any other human purpose besides food, and it is still associated with the military caste.
