This article focuses on some books on diseases and some social and historical aspects of them. These books are: "Shedding Life: Disease, Politics, and Other Human Conditions," by Miroslav Holub; "Viruses, Plagues and History, "by Michael Oldstone; "Epidemics and History: Disease, Power and Imperialism," by Sheldon Watts. Miroslav Holub, the accomplished Czech poet-doctor launches his new series of essays, with an arresting discussion of the nature of disease itself. Michael Oldstone's book has a charmingly hagiographic attitude toward the titans of biomedical research and the World Health Organization, whose crowning achievement was the total eradication of smallpox twenty years ago.
