The article focuses on how the United States military goes about investigating allegations of torture. The author reviews the case of Nagem Sadoon Hatab, who was detained by U.S. forces and beaten to death. No charges were ever brought in Hatab's case, after evidence related to the case was irrevocably damaged while in the custody of the military. It is the author's view that there has been a pattern of disregard for the niceties of evidence collection, storage and processing - as well as handing of witnesses - in cases of detainee deaths.
