The article focuses on the political vitality of the Democratic Party and the progressive movement in the United States. The author reviews how the 2004 presidential election inspired unprecedented political mobilization among both the left and the right. It is the author's view that last year's mobilization pointed the way toward a future progressive movement radically different from the loose conglomeration of Washington-based-issue-advocacy organizations that have dominated the liberal-left since the 1970s. The article includes comments on the issue from Steve Rosenthal, co-founder and CEO of America Coming Together.
