The article focuses on U.S. Senator John McCain of Arizona. The article discusses the McCain's role in the ongoing controversy involving illegal immigration on the Arizona-Mexico border. It is the author's view that there have always been two sides to McCain, the conservative loyalist and the unpredictable maverick. According to the author, McCain has been a pragmatic problem solver and has sky-high approval ratings and cross-over appeal. The article questions which U.S. citizens make up McCain's ideological base.
