The article looks at state elections in the United States, with a focus on the gubernatorial election of Democrat Tim Kaine in Virginia. Kaine has been a supporter of moves to increase taxes to fund education, environmental programs, and racial justice. Kaine's political campaign probably benefited from the decline of public support for Republican President George W. Bush's administration. In New Jersey, Democratic candidate Jon Corzine had a successful gubernatorial race. Republican Mayor Michael Bloomberg in New York City was reelected by being more liberal than Bush.
