The media's own Kosovo crisis

Massing, Michael | May 3, 1999 issue

This article focuses on the media role in Kosovo war. When the bombs started falling, the author, like millions around the world, instinctively tuned in to CNN. More than any other news outlet, CNN defines how the world perceives international events, and initially the author felt a rush of gratitude for the network. At any hour of the day or night, CNN was there, providing the latest out of Belgrade, Brussels and Washington. Whether it was a bridge taken out over the Danube, NATO announcing a new wave of air strikes or Kenneth Bacon fielding questions at the Pentagon, CNN provided instant coverage.
