Focuses on the distribution of liberalism in large cities, aging industrial cities and college towns that are otherwise surrounded by conservatism as it appears on electoral maps. Observation that every American city with a population of more than 500,000 voted for John Kerry in 2004, and half the cities between 50,000 and 500,000; Trend for cities to elect progressive leaders, with the election of Antonio Villaraigosa in Los Angeles as an example, when state governments are dominated by right-wing leaders; Issues that concern cities and city dwellers, aligning them naturally with Democratic causes and against Republican conservatism.
