This article informs that the Afro-American Ministers Council of New Jersey has been waging a longstanding battle against what it alleges is a practice by state troopers of stopping cars based on race-based "suspect profiling." Statistics indisputably show that most of those convicted of drug-related offenses are white, yet assumptions to the contrary abound. At its best, a "suspect profile" even when backed by solid forensic expertise and data, is a composite providing clues, not a guarantee. At worst, profiling may be little more than an individual officer's "hunch." Many agencies misunderstand or misuse even legitimate data about suspect behavior.
