The article focuses on the importance of the international human rights movement. As an Irish citizen living in the United States, my travels put me in regular contact with Americans from "red" and "blue" states alike. I am encouraged by an emerging awareness among Americans that U.S. domestic and international policies are increasingly out of sync with long-held American beliefs in fairness, opportunity and shared responsibility. They are convinced that unless the United States plays a constructive role in promoting social and economic development for all, frustration will lead to further social unrest and political instability, threatening human security today and in the future. The Democratic Party, as well as governments and political parties around the world, should see the election results as an opportunity to form a new movement based around shared values and shared responsibilities. The international human rights movement covers civil and political rights--to liberty, freedom of speech and religion, freedom from torture, and fair trial--all part of the best American traditions.
