The article presents information on various social and political developments in the United States. It is reported that, the Senate has passed the Post-Office Appropriation Bill after a prolonged struggle over the Roach subsidy, and the Army Appropriation Bill after summary rejection of the most important sections agreed to by the House, and an interesting debate on a section of its own relating to the conversion of railroads into telegraph companies. Moreover, it is also informed that, the sales of U.S. 4 percent bonds have been sufficient during the week to enable the Treasury to notify the holders $20,000,000 more U.S. 5-20s of 1867 that they will be redeemed ninety days hence. This makes $250,000,000 of 6 percents replaced with 4 percents since the beginning of the year. The buying of the 4 percent bonds at the commercial centres has fallen off, and purchases come mostly from the country.
