This article discusses the motion pictures "The Silent Village," directed by Humphrey Jennings, and "48 Hours," by Alberto Cavalcanti. When men kill in this film they do it much more abruptly and simply; the reactions of women who kill or cause death are seriously studied, and good and terrible to see. The best of "48 Hours" is neither in its people nor, mainly, in there exciting, melodramatically plausible actions, aside from one gentle, marvelous, awful shot in which four cycling Home Guards oscillate and spill under machines gun fire, but in its relating of the people and their actions to their homes, their town, their tender, lucid countryside.
