This article discusses the book "The Innocents at Cedro: A Memoir of Thorstein Veblen and Some, With the Advice and Consent of William M. Duffus," by R.L. Duffus. The author lays claim to two legacies from Veblen, skepticism of accepted values and an appreciation of good workmanship. Skepticism was hardly peculiar to Veblen, and the emphasis on the importance of the instinct of workmanship is but one of the various factors of his attitude. The social-mindedness of Duffus seems to be an inheritance from the family background rather than from the master. The one passionate outburst in this urbane essay is a defense of social security, and it is occasioned by the death of the father from an occupational disease.
