The visit of General Charles de Gaulle was a skilful job of diplomatic engineering. Obviously an agreement between him and the President could not be delayed. The practical problems created by the invasion had to be met in practical political terms; no longer could French claims be dismissed as irrelevant. The Committee of Liberation is functioning as a government on French soil to the apparent satisfaction of both the people and the Allied High Command. The British have hammered out a series of agreements governing the administration of freed areas similar to those made with Belgium, Holland, and Norway.
