The article presents information related to social and economic issues. Certains of the automobile industry have long argued that federal regulations and product liability laws crucially hamper their ability to conduct business. Consequently, they've never met a regulation they could endorse and have lobbied against safety and emissions standards with undimmed vigor for close to half a century. Election-year politics is threatening one of the least heralded but most successful federal laws passed in recent years, the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). In 1994, just before the Republican revolution, VAWA squeaked through Congress. Since passage, it has been one of the few social services funding programs to enjoy bipartisan support. But now, thanks to slick maneuvers by a few Congressional Republicans, VAWA is in trouble.
