This article focuses on some of the labor movements in the United States. There was a rally at Washington D.C. that began a week of actions to support global justice. The Jubilee 2000 rally, where AFL-CIO president John Sweeney spoke passionately about the need for cancellation of Third World debt. The AFL-CIO was slow to endorse the April 16 rally against the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, which promised to offer not only dancing puppets but a radical critique of global capital. At least some parts of the labor movement have kept up the rollicking spirit of Seattle; Steelworkers were planning to deliver Propaganda Survival Kits to House members about to go on Administration-led trips to China. The kits contain a Tibetan flag,a picture of the Dalai Lama and other items that can cause the bearer to get arrested in China.
