After decades in which the Republican Party ignored the Latino vote and the Democratic Party took it for granted, both parties now seem to be in a mad rush to outdo each other in courting Latino voters in the U.S. The major presidential candidates are speaking Spanish, there are Spanish-language sections on the campaign web sites, special polls and opinion surveys of Latinos are being bankrolled. Republicans, at least, are beginning to make inroads into Democratic dominance at the voting booth. George W. Bush, Governor of Texas, and Arizona Senator John McCain, the two major Republican presidential candidates, both claim significant Latino support in their home states.
