The article presents incidents related to the world politics. The southern Mexican countryside swarms with helicopter gunships raining .50-caliber machine-gun shells on suspected guerrilla holdouts while infantry detachments follow their elusive trail. Just two years after the emergence of the Zapatistas in the state of Chiapas, a new insurgency calling itself the Popular Revolutionary Army-the E.P.R.-has carried out high-profile military attacks in a half-dozen other Mexican states, pushing an already unstable Mexico ever closer to the brink. Another event refers to an incident in which G.O.P pollster Frank Luntz to devise a "communications" strategy for Republicans.
