This article presents information on some recent socio-political developments. According to Mahathir Mohamad, Prime Minister of Malaysia, the financial crisis being faced by Southeast Asia is largely due to George Soros and his fellow currency traders. Before the crisis his, Asia was seen as the model region for what are optimistically called the developing countries. It is further informed that Thomas Friedman himself suggested that the Singapore-Malaysia-Indonesia high-tech triangle deserved a place in the G-7 countries. Before its financial crisis of 1994-95, Mexico was also seen as the model country. Now, collapsing currencies and swooning stock markets and emerging banking crises have shown that even the Asian "miracle" economies are also mortal.
