The article focuses on various events taking place in the year 1997 in the U.S. Painter and storyteller Eric Drooker will give a musical slide lecture about his use of art as a political weapon on April 11, 1997 in Manhattan. Presentation of the Ethical Humanist Award by the New York Society for Ethical Culture to Senator Paul Wellstone for his courageous actions in voting against the 1996 "welfare reform" legislation was held on April 3, 1997. At the year's Socialist Scholars Conference, titled Radical Alternatives on the Eve of the Millennium, a debate was held on strategies and tactics for defeating the right intellectually, culturally and politically from March 28 to 30, 1997 in Manhattan.
