The city of Weimar, the Goethe Institute and the European literary magazine "Lettre Internationale," are co-sponsoring an essay contest in conjunction with Weimar's role as Europe's cultural capital for 1999. The judges have chosen two questions for the world's thinkers to ponder. They are, "Liberating the Future From the Past?" and "Liberating the Past From the Future?" The Weimar contest asks participants for a maximum of 10,500 words on these pressing issues. The last date for submission is 30 November, 1999.
