Whitewash for Pope

The article focuses on the book "Alexander Pope," written by Edith Sitwell. Sitwell has written in favor of Alexander Pope many of the things which have never been said before, but it is also almost ludicrously intemperate, biased, and blind to all the things it would not see. Sitwell has taken him under her protection, gone forth to light his battles, and, apparently, conceived for him that sort of romantic attachment which is generally reserved for poets of a softer kind. Indeed, one can explain her excitement only on the assumption that she has made some sort of identification between herself and him, and the result is a study with all the interest and all the defects inevitable under the circumstances.
