The article presents information on the book "Japan in World History," by G.B. Sansom. This book provides an opportunity to observe in action a man who knows Japan and the Japanese as few Westerners know them, making a contribution, very small, Sansom would say to the restoration of good relations between Japan and the West. He emphasizes as particularly important in this task the building of individual freedom, liberal scholarship, and general tolerance in Japan, in whose defense the Japanese failed so miserably during the 1930's.
