Every major country that has utilized universal military training (UMT) has reaped a harvest of poverty and national impotence. UMT, because it has been oversold by the military, creates a Maginot Line complex. Even the members of the National Security Training Commission in their recent report to the U.S. Congress recognize this fact when they state: "We emphasize that UMT could be dangerous if UMT were, for example, to become an excuse for the precipitate reduction of our standing forces." UMT is in direct conflict with the fundamental principles on which the United States was founded; it prostitutes the principle of free choice and free enterprise that has given the American nation the strength to grow to its present unchallenged power.
