The article focuses on State Street Boston Corp., the social security privatization company. At the December White House conference, State Street's CEO Marshall Carter met with Gene Sperling, the White House point man on social security, to provide the White House with some of State Street's expertise on the intricate technology available to manage and administer 140 million new social security-linked private accounts. To prod the U.S. movement toward privatization, State Street has provided grants to a wide range of policy shops, including Cato, the Employee Benefits Research Institute, the Democratic Leadership Council's Progressive Policy Institute and the National Academy of Social Insurance.
