LIMITING HEALTH CARE FOR THE OLD

The article focuses on the benefit provided by an established health care program for the older people in the U.S. At the same time those events were taking place, a government campaign for cost containment was under way, with a special focus on health care to the aged under Medicare. In 1980, people over age 65, 11 percent of the population accounted for 29 percent of the total American health care expenditures of 219.4 billion dollars. Anyone who works closely with the elderly recognizes that the present Medicare and Medicaid programs are grossly inadequate in meeting their real and full needs.
