This article discusses the book "Male Fantasies: Volume 1: Women, Floods, Bodies, History," by Klaus Theweleit. Theweleit's project may strike the academic historian as a flight of fancy, produced by the convergence of 1960s German New Leftism with the early women's liberation movement. "Male Fantasies" is disturbing, however, for its entrance into, not its flight from, history. Theweleit is suspicious of what he calls theory, but a theory is born from the material at which he makes the reader look. To explain the exterminatory rage against female sexual power, the book offers a theory about the symbiotic bond between mother and infant, about the difficulties of separation, and so on.
